We were delighted and incredibly grateful to be the recipients of a £500 donation raised by the Kelso Breezers
Kelso Breezers, a group for women who like to cycle, has boosted the coffers of three Borders charities following a fundraising venture.
It held a race night which raised £500 each for Just Cycle, Borders Pet Rescue and Kelso Heartbeats.
Kelso Breezers was formed five years ago from an initiative that allowed participants to sign up for trained volunteer-led cycle rides. It’s a way to get more women out on their bikes, no matter the bike or their ability. Rides are led by Breeze Champions to help and support others.
Although based in Kelso, the group is happy to arrange rides in areas within the Scottish Borders. It usually meets every Sunday at 9.30am at the carpark just outside Mayfield Garden Centre. Rides vary in distance, and all have alternatives.
The group kept going during Covid-19, by setting individual challenges. Then it met in small groups until full group outings were reinstated. As this year marks the Breezers’ fifth anniversary, it was decided to the best way to celebrate was by inviting members and others to a charity fundraising night.
Founder Laura Nisbet explained how the charities who benefited from the event were selected: “We chose Kelso Heartbeat because, if I hadn’t received CPR in 2017, I wouldn’t have gone on to set up the group.
“All the Kelso Ride leaders (as do many of our members), have pets. If we’re not on our bikes, we are out walking our dogs. At home our dogs want to play with our cat, so we picked Borders Pet Rescue.”
She added: “Just Cycle has supported us from the start, helping us with bikes and parts, so we wanted to give something back. We are very grateful to everyone who supported our fundraiser.”
Just Cycle are also proud sponsors of the Tweedbank Fair this year, which begins on Sunday 28th May with the investiture.

Border Bikes Hub is a collaborative project with other cycling partners hosted by Just Cycle and aims to connect cycling across the Scottish Borders. We invited you to join us!
